Q:How To Use a Screw Extractor

A:If you've been around tools for very long you've probably run into a situation where the head of a screw has become stripped or the head of a bold has broken off, preventing you from extracting it in the normal way. Fortunately there is still a way for you to get a damaged screw or bolt out of wood or metal. It is called a screw extractor. A screw extractor fits on your variable-speed electric drill. It looks somewhat like a drill bit, although it tapers up from a point like an inverse pyramid and the ribs on the bit are not designed to drill out wood or metal, but rather to grab hold.Instructions1.Put a metal drill bit in your variable-speed electric drill that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the damaged screw or bolt that you need to remove.2.Strike your metal tap with your hammer to make a small indentation in the top of the damaged screw or bolt. This small indentation is intended as a starting place for drilling a hole into the damaged screw or bolt so try to make your indentation as close to the center of the damaged head as you can..3.Put a drop of machine oil on the damaged or broken head of the screw or bolt that you need to remove and then drill a shallow hole into the top of the damaged screw or bolt. Drill down far enough so that your drill extractor can fit down into the hole snugly. Wear eye protection when drilling.4.Remove the drill bit from your drill and insert the screw extractor. Flip the switch on your drill (usually found near the start/stop switch) so your drill will run in reverse.5.Insert the tip of the drill extractor into the hole you drilled into the top of your damaged screw or bolt. Slowly pull the trigger on your drill. As your drill turns counter clockwise the drill extractor will grab hold of the damaged screw or bolt and slowly unscrew it. Continue unscrewing the broken screw or bolt until it comes free. Always wear eye protection when running your drill.

Q:How To Remove an Oil Filter

A: An oil filter casing hand-tightened during installation will tighten when the engine heats up and cools down. During the 3,000 to 5,000 miles between oil changes, the filter casing can tighten enough that a filter wrench is needed to remove it. Oil filter wrenches are available in many variations but two common styles are affordable and easy to find. Strap-style filter wrenches fit different-size filters and adjust to tighten on a casing. Socket-style wrenches fit a specified type and size of filter casing but require less room to operate than a strap-style wrench.Prepare the Vehicle 1.Set a ramp in front of each front tire of the vehicle. Drive your vehicle up the car ramps. Turn off the vehicle. Apply the parking brake. Place a wheel chock behind each rear tire of the vehicle. Allow the engine to cool for at least an hour. 2.Slide a drain pan under the vehicle's oil pan. Remove the drain plug from the engine-oil pan with an open-end wrench. Allow the oil to drain from the engine-oil pan. Replace the drain plug. Tighten the plug with the open-end wrench.  3.Move the drain pan under the oil filter.Strap-style Wrench Oil Filter Removal 1.Slide the strap of the strap-style wrench over the oil filter casing with the back of the handle facing counterclockwise.  2.Push the handle counterclockwise to release the oil filter casing from the engine. Pull the handle of the tool clockwise to rotate the handle if you run out of room to push the tool handle. 3.Slide the strap-style wrench off of the oil filter casing.4.Turn the oil filter wrench counterclockwise by hand to remove the filter casing from the engine.  Socket Filter Wrench Oil Filter Removal1.Push a socket filter wrench onto the bottom of the oil filter casing.  2.Set a 3/8-inch ratchet handle to turn counterclockwise. Push the end of the ratchet handle into the socket of the socket filter wrench. 3.Turn the ratchet handle counterclockwise until the oil filter casing loosens. 4.Spin the loosened filter casing counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the engine.
